Who H.I.M. Be???

"Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity."
Horace Mann

H.I.M. is "Haiti Is Me". Haiti Is Me is a Haitian relief campaign. Haitian relief is a an issue that is dear to my heart.

I, and the creator of H.I.M. Calcie Cooper, just happen to actually be Jamaican (YARDIES!!!). Growing up in NYC (Calcie in Brooklyn and myself in Queens), Haitian culture and and her people, have become akin to my own (PASS THE LUMBI!!!). Furthermore, I can easily sympathize with all forms of suffering. And suffering on such a large scale should be impossible to ignore.

Immediately following the earthquake (four days after), I organized my group "Ti Haiti" (originally formed to promote Haitian a year earlier) to put together a food drive to aid the survivors. With the help of Fordham University (MY ALUMNI) and individuals like Ky Hester, Kim Morgan, Margo DaCosta, Simone Thomas and Prof. Jack Cooper (no relation to Calcie) we where able to collect and deliver the goods to an orphanage in Haiti.

But, that was simply like giving a man a fish. Calcie and the H.I.M. family (Gardy Guerrier, Latoya Henry and Shana Stevenson, to name a few) have applied the "teach a man how to fish" mode of thinking. The goals of H.I.M. have been broken down into 3 parts:

1- We want to engage folks and continue to remind them what state Haiti is currently in.

2- We want to help empower people by providing information of how they can be apart of the rebuilding process.

3- We want to use the H.I.M. brand to raise funds as well as advocated for Haiti's rebirth in particularly in the area of education. You can't give someone a new tool if they don't know how to use it. The "new tool" is metaphoric for the "New Haiti".

The Burpee??? Yes, the Burpee...

"If any thing is sacred the human body is sacred."
Walt Whitman

Recently, a coworker (John Rankin) and myself were watching Hannibal For King on Youtube. IMPRESSIVE!!!. This guy is either a testament real hard work and determination or to solitary confinement. The Human Flag move he does at the end is INSANE!!! In short, the dude really motivates and inspires me.

I currently have an AVERAGE workout regiment but to achieve Hannibal's level of development...(Let's say I'll have to step it up a bit...). John, my resident fitness maven, is much further along that road than I. He can do 150 push ups (straight)... I can do a modest 60 (if I push myself). He does 600 push ups daily... I do 160 (if I push myself). Even give my modest workouts, I have friends who I try to motivate to reach up to my level (with the hopes that they will further motivate me)... with minor success.

John introduced and explained plyometrics (a new form of calisthenics) to me, so I in turn am introducing it to you. No more, "I don't wanna join a gym" or "I don't have time" excuses. To paraphrase John, the human body is like it's own gym. You can use your own weight as resistance to build strength, enhance speed and improve your overall fitness.

The following workout require little time and no machinery.

Squats...

Push ups...

Lunges...

Sit-ups

GETTING STARTED
To determine your required rep amount...
1. (Max out). Do as many reps of each exercise as you can (to start out).
2. Two fifths (2/5) of that amount will be the amount of reps you should be doing at least 3 sets of. Example, if you did 50 straight squats to start out then you should be 3 sets of 20 reps.

Push-up + Squat = The Burpee

Hannibal For King (Don't try this at home) Trust me...(I did and it wasn't pretty)

A Timepiece is the Sun of a Mans Outfit's Universe...

"Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time."
Steven Wright

And... We can all have the time. All you need to do is simply purchase it by acquiring that timepiece that is the personification of yourself (Who said "you can't buy time", poppy cock, I've done so a number of times throughout my life). The timepiece to the man is like the anchor to the ship. Every man should have at least one.

This isn't about price point that venture into the high altitudes. This is about your taste, preference and liking. When making your selections don't follow trends, you should follow your heart. The pulse of the piece should be in tune with beat of your heart. If chosen correctly, the two of you should have many years of enjoyment together (...yes, it is like marriage).

As I always preach, "accessories make the oufit". The primary accessory every man should have is a timepiece. After and only after, this void is filled, can you pursuit other statement makers. So, remember timepiece equals anchor....
