Seven Comforting Convictions

“Every man, wherever he goes, is encompassed by a cloud of comforting convictions, which move with him like flies on a summer day.”
Bertrand Russell

In this case, comforting convictions will equal summer “must haves”. Here is a brief list of 7 of those comforting convictions…

1) Slim Fit Jeans – Baggie jeans are so NOT in ...but truly skinny jeans maybe too extreme and aren’t for everyone’s physique or taste. Slim fit is the answer. “Ankle cleavage” is also very “of the moment”, so experiment with a double cuff at the hem.

2) TOMS - Lightweight shoes based on the Argentine alpargata design. For every new pair sold, Friends of TOMS donates a new pair of shoes to an impoverished child. Wearing a pair of TOMS sends a message. It says “I care” and chicks dig that. Plus they’re comfortable as hell…

3) Deck (Boat) shoes – They scream summer relaxation. Sebago and Sperry have championed the design for quite sometime. I prefer them without socks (remember... ankle cleavage) but, I’ll allow you to choose. Additionally, you should also opt for the traditional white rubber, non-marking soles.

4) Light weight cardigan – The cardigan look is a staple. This item is ideal for those chilly moments (cool summer nights, the train, the office, any over air conditioned space). The ability to wear them open or closed makes them extremely versatile.

5) Sunglasses – This is obvious. Sunglasses and the summer time are like peanut butter and jelly (inseparable). Be sure to attain a pair that compliment the shape of your face or that you absolutely love. (I wear my sunglasses at night, so I can, so I can …)

6) Panama hat (or Straw fedora) – They’ve made a very strong comeback from about 5 years ago. They’re light weight and cooling. They proclaim “physically I’m here but spiritually I’m somewhere in the tropics”.

7) Man’s Tote – This for the truly fashion forward man (not all can pull this off). The shoulder strap is getting passé. The tote gives off the aura of an ultra fashionable man on the move. (Catch me if you can…)

…So live the summer, don’t let the summer live you.

One plus one equals three... or four... or five...

“Men who never get carried away should be.”
Malcolm Forbes

Who would Fonzie be without his leather jacket? Where would Frederick (Freddy) "Rerun" Stubbs be without his red beret and suspenders? What would Spike Lee be without his trademark eyeglasses? How could Larry King survive without his suspenders?

While it is very true that the man wears the clothes and not the other way around, accessories are an awesome compliment. This truism is too often overlooked. Say it with me “Accessories make the outfit”. I encourage experimentation. I encourage bravery.

From ascots to bowties, from suspenders to pocket squares, from feather boas to fingerless gloves, a small addition to an ensemble can resonate throughout….

A Car That's All Things To All People (Well??? To The People That Count)

"Genius hath electric power which the earth can never tame"
Lydia M. Child

Tesla Motors' products are like perfect women. They're responsible enough to raise children, cook, clean, do windows and they still look drop dead gorgeous in a thong and a pair of stilettos. The Roadster, for instance, can do zero to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds (Super Sexy). At the same time, it doubles the energy efficiency of a Toyota Pruis (Super Smart). Come to think about it, if Tesla was a woman, she'd be kind of intimidating...

In honor of their recent (Super Successful) IPO, I thought it fitting that we, the Sophistiques, tip our hats to them. Tesla Motors was founded in 2003 by Californian Martin Eberhard, Marc Tarpenning and South African-American engineer Elon Musk (who also co-founder PayPal). The group were extreme sports car enthusiasts, who were driven by a disdain for dependency on Middle Eastern oil and global warming.

Tesla Motors borrows it name from Serbian inventor, mechanical engineer, and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla. Tesla is known for his work in the area of commercial electricity (So it's a perfect fit).

Since the genius's down at Tesla Motors seem to have perfected the automobile, maybe they should take on other challenges such as, Brussels sprouts that taste like candy or skinny jeans that feel baggy...the possibilities are endless...
